The Technology Behind Residential Life
For thousands of University of Arizona students, the start of the fall semester also means settling into a new home. They connect laptops to UAWiFi, stream shows, set up gaming consoles, swipe into buildings and check whether a washing machine is available.
Making all of that work requires a complex technology environment operating largely behind the scenes.
Dana Robbins-Murray, director of administrative services for Housing & Residential Life, and Jose Fragaso, UITS IT architecture manager, help oversee and support the systems that keep the residential environment running. Their work touches nearly every part of the residential experience, including connectivity, access control, housing applications, laundry technology, security systems, and the devices used by Housing staff.
“Students expect dorm connectivity to feel like a dependable home utility: fast, strong and continuously available,” Fragaso said. “However, a dorm is considerably more complex than a typical home network.”
A single student may bring two to five connected devices to campus. Multiply that across thousands of residents, and residence halls can have tens of thousands of devices connecting at the same time. Demand also remains high well beyond the workday as students study, stream, game and connect with friends throughout the evening and on weekends.
University Information Technology Services works closely with Housing & Residential Life to support that environment. UITS Specialized Services and Enterprise Desktop Support serve as the primary technology partners for Housing staff, working alongside teams such as Network Operations, Telecommunications, Enterprise Endpoint Management and 24/7 Support.
The work extends well beyond Wi-Fi. Electronic access systems need to remain synchronized with housing assignments, check-ins and room changes. Network-connected laundry equipment relies on connectivity, vendor systems and payment processing. Cameras, digital signage, front-desk computers, tablets, printers and specialized Housing applications all contribute to the technology operating within a residence hall.
Preparing those systems for fall semester begins long before students unpack their first box.
Summer is a critical period for technology readiness. Teams review issues from the previous academic year, test wireless coverage, replace aging equipment and prepare devices for move-in. Housing applications, room assignments, key distribution and billing integrations are tested, along with laundry connectivity, cameras and digital signage.
“The goal is not simply to make sure each individual technology is working. Teams have to consider the entire student experience, making sure the sequence of systems supporting housing assignments, check-in, building access and billing works as it should,” Robbins-Murray said.
One major project reached an important milestone just in time for this fall.
In 2026, UITS and Housing completed a four-year Wi-Fi refresh across all 24 undergraduate dorms. The project began in 2022, with each building evaluated individually based on construction, room layouts, existing cabling and student capacity.
Behind the familiar UAWiFi network name were wireless assessments, cost estimates, funding, new or relocated access points, infrastructure upgrades and extensive testing. UITS teams, contractors, residence hall staff and other campus partners coordinated much of the installation around limited summer windows to minimize disruption to students.
The growing dependence on that infrastructure has also changed the consequences when something goes wrong.
“Technology failures are no longer isolated,” Fragaso said.
A network issue can now affect Wi-Fi, laundry, cameras, displays, staff operations and other building services at the same time. As students bring more devices and rely more heavily on cloud applications, video and other connected services, planning for capacity, monitoring and continuity has become increasingly important.
For students arriving this fall, much of that work will go unnoticed. In this case, that's exactly the point: open the laptop, connect and get on with college life.
