University Research Shines at Supercomputing Conference
Our Research Technologies team represented the University of Arizona’s top tier research brand along with that of ASU and NAU at the Supercomputing Conference (SC23), this year held in Denver.
The tri-university team, which is referred to as Arizona Research Computing, helped promote the HPC capabilities and research support offered at the University of Arizona. More than 14,000 attended the premier conference for supercomputing.
Although there is a terrific sports rivalry between Arizona’s three universities, the conference brings the research computing teams together for a joint booth. There’s no surprise that the researchers get along very well since there are no sports involved. Besides the renewal of relationships and networking with attendees, there are recruitment opportunities and the UITS team usually comes back with ideas for improving our services.
“The University of Arizona provides substantial computation and storage resources for our research community, and we use the conference to learn about new technologies, attend informative workshops, and meet up with other community members,” explains Chris Reidy, Research Facilitation Manager, Research Computing, UITS.
Introduction of hi-tech products and a focus on inclusivity was the top theme at SC23. The keynote speaker was celebrated physicist and TV host Hakeem Oluseyi, who challenged the audience to treat people equally and fairly and to mentor and help others. He mixed Einstein’s Theory of Relativity with how mentors helped him through a troubled like to become a prominent scientist.
The most interesting attendee at SC23? A llama brought by one of the many vendors. It was a low-tech addition that drew a lot of attention!
