When the annual Tucson Festival of Books comes to campus, UA local and international visibility is huge. This two-day festival, now in its tenth year, is the third largest of its kind in the United States, and is focused on literature, authors, reading, and learning for all ages. The Tucson community mixes with visitors from all over the world. University staff assist event staff with preparing the mall and surrounding buildings for the anticipated 100,000 visitors and resellers.

The UA is an important partner in the success of the festival. Many colleges and departments get involved and assist with the event before, during, and after visitors arrive on our campus to ensure a smooth experience for all.

How does UITS support the Tucson Festival of Books?  Staff from our 24/7 IT Support Center, network, telecommunications, and classroom technology teams assist with Wi-Fi and networking, computers, projectors and more. Our WNC support team spent all day—morning to night—with festival organizers to ensure access. Technology is critical to presenters in the classrooms, resellers, dedicated areas such as Science City, and overall event safety and security.

This year, Karen Williams, VP of Information Strategy and University Libraries, facilitated a panel entitled, WAR GIRLS, including Liza Mundy (Code Girls), Elizabeth Cobb (The Hello Girls), and Kate Moore (The Radium Girls). Each book relays a history of how women contributed and were affected by war. The authors offered panel attendees a heartfelt, in-depth look at challenging topics that unearth their untold stories.
