What’s New for Students—Fall 2024
New places to get tech help, better spam filtering, an easier to find mobile app, and an approved AI meeting notetaker!
Welcome new and returning Arizona Wildcats! Gear up for fall with the latest details on all things tech as we start a new semester.
Get Support
Charge your devices, work (or surf) while you lunch, print a paper, or get tech support in the new Student Union Memorial Center Tech Zone Lounge. The OSCR computer lab, previously located on the lower level, has been relocated to a more comfortable space in the south corridor on the main level with the new name. The Tech Zone Lounge consultants can give you in-person help with university services like UAWiFi, NetID, and D2L; troubleshooting your personal devices; and using software.
These services are also available in the Global Center (2nd floor) and South Rec Center Tech Zone Lounges, and the Main Library (lower level) Tech Zone.
When you have IT questions while not at a Tech Zone, try the university’s knowledge base. There are thousands of articles for using university online services, from basic setup to ways to fix things when they go wrong. Log in to make sure you are finding all the information you can. (And, of course, you can always get phone, chat, or online answers at 247.arizona.edu.)
Navigate Campus
You might have noticed the Arizona Mobile app is now the University of Arizona app, with a new icon. The new name is easier to find in the App Store and Google Play, but you still get the same great tools! The U of A app is the best way to find locations on campus, get UAlerts, and see Cat Tran information. Sign in and you’ll also see your classes, appointments, library space reservations, and RSVPs for university events.
New Tech Features
The university is doing more to protect you from spam and phishing emails. Are you receiving emails from postmaster at arizona.edu saying you have new held messages? These are from our email security system (Mimecast), a new improvement to the university’s spam filtering to increase security. You can release or block held email directly from the notice or go to your email security portal.
If you’ve been looking for an AI assistant, Zoom AI Companion has been approved and added for use by meeting hosts in university Zoom accounts! (Although not in Zoom for Health.) You can turn it on in your Zoom Settings for your own meetings. For course meetings, ask your instructor if they have enabled it– Zoom AI tools will not be available in course meetings if the instructor has not turned on AI Companion settings. Get help with note taking, creating lists, and more.
