For the Fans: Boingo Wireless Begins Cell Coverage Expansion in Arizona Stadium
Calling, sharing photos, tweeting, and surfing the web will be faster and easier for over 60,000 fans in Arizona Stadium in the fall, thanks to a new distributed antenna system (DAS) scheduled for the University of Arizona. The University has signed a contract with Boingo Wireless to install additional cellular radio antennas to improve cellular voice and data connectivity in Arizona Stadium. The work is scheduled for completion this fall, during the football season.
The stadium upgrade is part of the university’s ongoing investment to keep improving and strengthening our campus network. The stadium project is the first DAS to be installed on campus, and is the first phase of installation planned for cellular antenna expansion. Boingo will also have the opportunity to present installation plans for the additional phases, which could include antennas installed in campus residence halls, approximately 240 buildings around campus, and The McKale Center.
Boingo will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of the antennas based on the requirements of the university contract, at no cost to the university. The company will sell access to the antennas to major cell phone carriers, which will eliminate the need for individual providers to build their own antenna systems on campus.
Boingo Wireless has installed and maintains small cell networks that cover more than a million locations worldwide. Boingo was selected from a Request for Proposal process, which brought in 14 vendors interested in participating, four of whom submitted final proposals. The proposal and vendor selection process was decided by a committee comprised of representatives from UITS; Athletics; Planning, Design, and Construction; Facilities Management; and Real Estate Administration.
The DAS expansion is part of the Strategic Network Master Plan, a ten-year plan developed by campus IT professionals and the Office of the CIO to upgrade the capacity and security of the campus network to anticipate and meet the technological needs of students, faculty, and staff.
