MS Project Professional and MS Visio Online

Associated Service:
Microsoft Campus Software Agreement

MS Project and MS Visio Deactivation January 6, 2020 of Previous License Key Versions

Older versions of MS Project and MS Visio acquired with a license download key from UA Bookstores will be deactivated January 6th, 2020 which means you will not be able to access the software.

The Microsoft Campus Agreement this year is operating under a new cost model. As part of that agreement we have lost rights to older versions of the MS Project and MS Visio software. Any versions of MS Project and MS Visio that are not the 2019 online versions are out of compliance.

Get ahead of this deadline: Uninstall the older version(s) and request your free 2019 Project and/or Visio online licenses now (See ‘How Do I Get It’ section).

NOTE: The removal of older versions does not apply to faculty or staff in a department who purchased a personal copy of these products.

The 2019 Microsoft software offerings of MS Project Professional Online and MS Visio Online are available to faculty and staff at no cost.

What are MS Project Online and MS Visio Online?

The online versions allow you to access the software on mobile devices and in virtually any web browser. You can also download the software onto your computer.

How Do I Get It?

Windows 10 is required to install MS Project and MS Visio 2019 Online versions.

  • Remove older versions of MS Project and MS Visio before installation of new 2019 online license
  • Go to https://uaservice.arizona.edu and log in
  • Click the 'Microsoft Products Request' to request your copy
  • Check the box that states, “By checking this box the signature authority agrees to remove all previous versions of MS Project/MS Visio from their device(s) before installing the current licensed product.”

You will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to download/access.

If you have questions about your MS Project or MS Visio software, contact your departmental IT support person.

For IT Staff Who Deploy Images in Their Environment

For those IT staff who deploy images in their environment, please remove MS Project 2016 and MS Visio 2016 from these images and request licenses now for the 2019 versions since we will be deactivating the MAK license keys January 6, 2020 - before Spring 2020 classes begin.

Shared Computer Activation is also Available for Subscription Versions of Project and Visio

For computer labs and remote desktop you can use the Shared Computer Activation instructions for Project and Visio online. This will require that each user that uses the software is licensed. This will not work for students whom we have not licensed for this software.

Here is more information on how to do so: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/overview-of-shared-compute...

Shared computer activation isn't available for Office for Mac.

Compatibility Issues

Unfortunately, being able to read old files of MS Visio (and Project too) not all Visio diagrams are compatible with MS Visio 2019 Online as laid out here; https://support.office.com/en-us/article/why-can-t-i-open-a-diagram-for-....

The same can be said for the rest of the Office for the web suite. Each web app has its own limitations. You are granted access to the desktop variants of MS Visio and MS Project to download and install, so that you can continue working with your existing files.

To download them to your desktop visit the Office 365 portal:

  • If you have installed Office 2019 and Project/Visio Online 2019 versions prior - uninstall them before proceeding
  • Select the Install Office button in the upper right and choose 'Other install options'
  • You will now be presented with options to download Visio and Project as individual programs

The desktop versions are only compatible with Windows and are to be used on their own or alongside Office 2019.

For Export Controlled work files stored on in-house encrypted drives this process works well.
