How to Subscribe to and Unsubscribe from a List

There are two ways to interact with the Sympa software: by email command or through the web interface. You can use either to subscribe or unsubscribe.

Subscribe to Email List via Email Command

  1. Choose the email address with which you wish to subscribe to the list. When using your official University of Arizona email address, you will be able to log into the email lists website with your NetID and password. If you use a different email address, you will have to create a separate login to manage subscriptions for that address.
  2. Send an email to list@list.arizona.edu from the email address you want to use. This is not a person but a mailing list management system, so messages should only contain commands.
  3. In the subject line of your email, type: subscribe listname firstname lastname (replace listname with the name of the list you want to subscribe to and indicate your own first name and last name).
  4. Leave the message body blank. Delete or turn off any automatic signature.

You will receive a message indicating whether or not your request was accepted. If subscription to the list is subject to approval, the list owner may elect not to subscribe you. If your request is not accepted, you can send a message to the list owner (listname-request@list.arizona.edu) explaining why you want to subscribe to the list.

You may be asked via email to confirm your subscription request before it can be completed. If so, please follow the instructions contained in the message you receive.

Depending on the type of list (subscription is subject to conditions or not) and the availability of the list owner, you may not receive a subscription notice immediately. Do not send multiple requests.

If your request is accepted, the message you receive confirms your subscription to the list. We advise you to keep all your subscription notices to mailing lists.

Subscribe to Email List via Web Interface

  1. Visit https://list.arizona.edu/sympa/.
  2. Log in. Logging in with your UA NetID and password lets you access your subscriptions with your official university email address. If you have subscriptions under a different email address, you will have to create a separate login under Don't have a NetID.
  3. Find the list you want to subscribe to using the categories listed under the Home tab, or use the alphabetical list under the List of Lists tab. Click the list you want to subscribe to.
  4. Click the Subscribe link in the left menu and submit your email address.

You will receive a message informing you whether your request was accepted or not.

Unsubscribe to Email List via Email Command

  1. Send an email from the address you are subscribed with to list@list.arizona.edu.
  2. In the subject line of your email, type in: unsubscribe listname (replace listname with the name of the list you want to unsubscribe from).
  3. If you are sending the mail from an address that is not the email address you are subscribed to the list with, make the subject unsubscribe listname email where email is the address you are subscribed with.
  4. Leave the message body blank. Delete or turn off any automatic signature.

Unsubscribe to Email List via Web Interface

  1. Visit https://list.arizona.edu/sympa/.
  2. Log in. Use your NetID and password if you are subscribed to the list with the address that is listed as your official university address. If your subscription is under an address that's not your official university address, log in under Don't Have a NetID with the login for that address.
  3. Find the list you want to unsubscribe from in the left menu and click it.
  4. Click the Unsubscribe link in the left menu.
