Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Environment
- Service Overview
- Eligibility & Costs
- Support, How-To’s & Info
Controlled Unclassified Information research computing environments meet the information security requirements mandated in NIST Special Publication 800-171. These environments are available to UA researchers when their government contract or award indicates that they are working with CUI or contract clauses indicate that NIST SP 800-171 controls are required.
Services available include:
- Amazon Web Services GovCloud, a US-located, US-staffed, compliant environment
- Secured laptops and encrypted USB for locally storing, processing, and transmitting CUI data
- Portal for secured communication with project sponsors
Contact the CUI team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
UA research faculty who are working with CUI will own projects in the CUI environment. The PI (principal investigator) can add members of their team on the Technology Control Plan who can access the project in the CUI environment.
UITS has created a direct charge model for the cost of a CUI environment. AWS charges for the time a system is up and running. Each environment will contain a bastion or terminal host (authentication and protection front end) and at least one compute host (device hosting analysis software with access to research data). AWS offers a wide variety of compute host types, configurations, and storage options as well as several different costing models. Cost will be determined by these variables. These will be direct AWS charges (no overhead or markup included) and will be billed to your provided KFS account. All environments will be supported by UITS. A cost estimate based on your project needs can be requested at email@example.com. For additional information, visit our Confluence page Controlled and Regulated Research Direct Charge Model.
Bastion / Terminal host (1 CPU, 2 GB RAM): $20 - $40 per month
General Purpose Compute hosts (2-4 CPUs, 8-16 GB RAM): $55 - $210 per month
Performance Compute hosts (2-8 CPUs, 4-16 GB RAM): $60 - $580 per month
GPU Enabled Compute hosts (4 CPUs, 1 GPU, 61 GB RAM): $550 - $950 per month
The third Thursday of each month from 6:00pm-12:00am, there will be scheduled down time for approximately 6 hours. During this maintenance window, the CUI platforms will be inaccessible and all running processes will be stopped. All administrative operations around the platform will resume immediately after the maintenance window. This time will be used to patch, update, and improve overall service.
if you have questions or issues, please contact the CUI administration team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
